Do software testers work remotely?
Although software testers can work remotely, data shows that employers strongly prefer to work from the office (WFO).
Analyzing 7,280 job postings on Naukri reveals that Work from Office dominates the job market with 7,072 positions, representing about 97% of all testing jobs.
Remote opportunities are limited to 176 positions (approximately 2.4% of jobs), while hybrid roles are even scarcer with just 32 positions (about 0.4% of available jobs).
The overwhelming preference for work from the office (97%) in software testing roles suggests that companies still strongly value in-person collaboration and supervision for testing activities.
Remote positions, while available, are relatively rare, with only about 1 in 40 testing jobs offering fully remote work options. This is notably different from some other tech roles where remote work has become more common post-pandemic.
79% Software Tester jobs in Hyderabad offer an average salary of 6-10 lakh
Based on an analysis of 7,280 software testing jobs, approximately 79% of positions offer salaries in the range of ₹6-10 LPA.
The highest concentration of jobs falls in the 6-10 LPA range with 5,799 positions. The second most common salary bracket is ₹3-6 LPA, comprising 4,020 positions (55.2%).
For more experienced testers, 3,123 positions (42.9%) offer ₹10-15 LPA, while 736 jobs (10.1%) provide ₹15-25 LPA.
Entry-level positions offering ₹0-3 LPA account for 591 jobs (8.1%).
At the higher end of the scale, opportunities become more selective with 135 positions offering ₹25-50 LPA, and just 19 roles reaching the ₹50-75 LPA bracket.
While entry-level positions are available, the data shows that gaining experience can significantly increase earning potential, though positions offering very high salaries (above ₹25 LPA) are relatively rare, comprising only about 2% of the total market.
Do you need experience to be a software tester?
Based on the analysis of 82 Software Tester Jobs, the outcome reveals that almost 70% of these positions require between 2 to 3 years of experience.
The top percentage category is for Software Tester with 3 years of experience, accounting for 58 available positions, followed closely by those with 2 years of experience at 56 jobs.
In contrast, Senior positions become more selective with 6 years requiring 26 positions (31.7%), 7 years having 20 positions (24.4%), and 8 years showing 10 positions (12.2%). Very senior positions are limited, with 9 years having 5 positions (6.1%) and 10 years having just 1 position (2.9%).
This data suggests that while fresher positions are available in software testing, the sweet spot for maximum job opportunities lies in the 2-4 years experience range.
The sharp decline in positions requiring more than 7 years of experience indicates that many testers typically move into leadership or specialized roles by this stage in their career rather than continuing as pure testers.
What skills does a software tester need?
We analyzed 7,280 job postings to identify the essential skills required for Software Tester roles. The top three skills are Automation Testing, Manual Testing, and Selenium, which form the core of a software tester’s toolkit.
Here’s a closer look at additional key skills:
- JIRA: This project management and issue-tracking tool is crucial for organizing and prioritizing testing tasks, tracking issues, and collaborating with other team members.
- SDLC (Software Development Life Cycle): Understanding SDLC allows testers to follow the full software creation process, knowing when and how to perform testing at each stage.
- Selenium: A leading tool for automation testing, Selenium allows testers to run test scripts on multiple browsers, reducing manual work and improving efficiency.
- Automation Testing: This involves creating automated test cases to check software functionality, saving time on repetitive tasks and ensuring consistent results.
- Manual Testing: Essential for identifying unique or unexpected issues, manual testing relies on a tester’s intuition and attention to detail to spot bugs automation may miss.
- Functional Testing: This approach checks if specific software features work as they should, ensuring that each function aligns with the requirements.
- Performance Testing: Critical for understanding how the software behaves under different conditions, including heavy loads or long-term usage, to ensure stability.
- Regression Testing: This ensures that recent changes haven’t unintentionally broken or affected existing features, safeguarding functionality with each update.
- Test Scripts: Writing scripts for automated testing is essential in Automation Testing, as it helps automate steps for complex tests that need to be repeated.
- Agile Methodologies: Knowledge of Agile practices allows testers to work in a fast-paced, iterative environment where continuous development and testing go hand-in-hand.
- API Testing: This skill involves testing Application Programming Interfaces (APIs) to confirm their reliability, functionality, and security, which is essential in many modern applications.
- SQL: SQL skills enable testers to query databases directly, verifying data integrity and backend operations, which is vital for ensuring accurate and functional data handling.
Together, these skills help software testers maintain high standards of quality, adapt to the project’s needs, and ensure the software performs reliably and efficiently across different scenarios.
What degree is needed for a Software Tester?
Another important observation is that most employers seek candidates with a bachelor’s degree for software testing roles.
Out of the 5,860 job listings analyzed, 90.90% of employers (5,327 positions) specifically require candidates with a bachelor’s degree for these positions.
In comparison, only 339 positions prefer candidates with a postgraduate degree. Interestingly, just 0.24% of employers in 14 positions are open to hiring candidates with a diploma qualification.
This trend suggests that aspiring software testers should prioritize obtaining a bachelor’s degree to maximize their employment opportunities.
What is the demand for software testing in the market?
The IT Services sector dominates the software testing job market, providing 73.06% of the total jobs, offering 5,319 positions out of the 7,280 available.
Other major sectors contributing to software testing opportunities include Technology with 5.67% (413 positions) and Professional Services with 4.95% (360 positions), followed by Healthcare at 3.49% (254 positions).
The BFSI sector and Media Entertainment & Telecom each contribute around 2.5-2.8% of opportunities. Smaller but notable contributions come from sectors like Manufacturing, Consumer, BPM, and Education showing the diverse application of software testing across industries.
